Im a New Zelander traveling to the USA for 8 months and I am in need of some advice.
Is it easier to travel with a van/ campervan or to just hostel it. If easier to travel by van whats a good site to buy a van, if not are hostel common around the states.
I would pick the hostel option because distances are so far in the USA to make travel quite $$$$$ + the $$$ parking problem. Even $$ campsites are not free here. (on top of that, tipping is expected in all but fast food places)
Are hostels common, ive had people tell me that they are not.
I do plan on traveling to LA and not spending to much time there I pretty much want to get off the beating track to truly experience the states.
I wish to see Yosmite, and them head north up the coast to Seattle

A lot depends on your budget but with gas hovering between $3-4 a gallon the camper van will be an expensive option. You won't find anywhere near the number of hostels in the US as you will in other places, but you'll find very cheap hotel rooms in a lot of places. There is plenty of free camping too, but a lot of places do fill up and thus now require reservation often with a fee to be paid.
I think you need to develop at least a rough itinerary and then we'll be able to offer some more specific advice.
Here the website for the That's the organized hostels, but not all of them, there are many independent hostels too. I'd suggest getting into LA and checking out some of the hostels there. You'll almost certainly meet people that have vehicles and want to share costs. keep an open plan and just go with the flow!
Keep in mind a "cheap" hotel in the states is probably around $50. Twice that in the major cities.
- LOL* Dave clearly stays in better cheap hotels than I do. I can usually find something decent for about $30-$35 or less if I use priceline.
Cheapest rooms I've seen in bulk however are probably down in orlando where you can get rooms for under $20 if you look hard.
