Once inside the MoBay terminal, there is a desk where transportation can be arranged to various towns. There are several shuttle vans waiting outside for passengers such as yourself. I don't recall what the fee is since it's been a bit since our last visit to Jamaica. But, the people at the desk will direct you to the correct shuttle bus for Negril.
They are safe and filled with other travelers and vacationers. If you have a hostel chosen by the time you arrive, the shuttle will usually drop you off at the front door. It is about a 90 minute ride so you do not want to take a regular cab, which may or may not be very safe (ie: left stranded, robbed, etc.).
We've used the shuttle to get to Negril and Runaway Bay with great success. Some drivers point out historical places and sights while others just remain quiet.

I forgot an important aspect... Do you have a set period of time you plan to stay in Negril? If so, book your return transportation to MoBay at the same time you arrange getting to Negril. (Especially since you are planning to stay in a hostel. Most hotels and resorts will do those reservations for their guests but a hostel may not.)
Allow yourself enough time to make the trip back and get through immigration. There will be an immigration tax payable at the airport only when you depart. In the past only Jamaican money was accepted and the equivalent of $25USD. Price may have increased and they may accept USD but I can't swear to that being correct.
Also, many of the shuttle drivers have friends/family that own roadside stalls along the way. They won't stop at them to Negril. But, it's common for them to unexpectedly stop at 1 or 2 on the way back to MoBay. (Under the guise of a bathroom break, buying snacks and of course some last minute trinkets.) We almost missed our flight because of the stop.
Most everything works on Jamaican time, which is great when time isn't an issue. But, it doesn't always work well if you have a particular schedule - like catching a flight.
