Im going to China, 4 January
Planning on going to Beijing, Harbin, Xian, Shanghai then Hong Kong & Macau. Maybe Leshan....Any tips on these places appreciated as I havent got much of a clue! Just hoping to turn up and all be okay haha

Nice that you are visiting China in Jan.
You need one full week to see Beijing..Lots of places to see...from Tiananmen square to Great Wall...Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven and to enjoy famous Peking duck.
Why did you choose Harbin? Suggest you not to miss ice festival that happens every year in Feb, i guess.Specially you must visit in the night to see the lighted up statues made of ice.
Shanghai though a commercial city, has to be visited to see Oriental Pearl tower, and others such as Yu Garden, Bund, Jade Buddha temple, Cruise on Peking River, Shanghai museum .
Near to Shanghai, there are water villages and s a must to visit: Zhouzhuang: Cruise on the Zhouzhuang River, visit Double Bridge, Mi Pavilion, Shen's house, etc.
Also Suzhou:Suzhou No.1 Silk Factory, Humble Administratons Garden (Zhuo Zheng Yuan), Tiger Hill and Chilly Hill Temple.
and Wuxi etc..
These are the places around Shanghai. You may keep Shanghai as base and visit one places everyday or you can visit and stay in each of the places.
You seem to have missed a lovely place Hangzhou .Here you can visit Hangzho West lake (boat tour), Linying Temple, Six H/Pagoda etc.Don't forget to drink special famous tea of Hanzhou.
In Xian you can visit, depending on your time, Shaanxi Provincial History Museum, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum, Huaqing Pool, Huashan Mountain, Banpo Museum, Famen Temple, Great Mosque and Bell & Drum Tower.
There are lots of things to see in HongKong...Note that currency in HongKong is Hongkong Dollars though it is part of China.Most nationalities can get visa on arrival.
Similarly Macau also has separate currency though it is also a part of China.Suggest you to stay in Macau atleast one night and one day to enjoy its beauty.It's Las Vegas of Asia!!

I'm also going to China at 16 march for 1 month.
My plan is to see Beijing, Pingyao, Xián, Shanghai and Qufu.
Are there any suggestions of what to see and what to do? I already have some ideas of what i'm supposed to see but some advice about these places will be appreciated as well .

Very nice of you to offer advice - i've read your post reply above and its already helpful as i didn't know how long to stay in Beijing.
My plan is also one month, and will be taking in as much as possible on a round trip from Hong Kong.
Hong Kong - Macau (1 night)
Macau - Guilin (3 nights)
Guilin - Chendu (3 nights)
Chendu - Xian (4 nights)
Xian - Zhengzhou (1 night)
Zhenhzhou - Beijing (7 nights)
Beijing - Shanghai (6 nights)
Shanghai - Yangtzee river (3 nights)
Yangtzee - Hong Kong (2 nights)
This is a very loose plan, and it is subject to a lot of change.
Could you let me know if it seems feasible to you?
I've factored in 6 nights in Shanghai because you listed quite a few things to do there.
Please forgive the many spelling errors, i'd be grateful for your advice on whether i'm taking on too much, or spending too much/little in places.

For HongKong and Macau, one day is not enough. HongKong itself needs about 4-5days though depends on what you wish to see. Better to stay in Macau atleast for one night and one day to experience Las Vegas of east!!
To be noted that train journey takes long time since distances like Zhenhzhou - Beijing are long. Also train reservation can be done only 10days in advance in China. Suggest that some train journeys like Beijing to shanghai can be done since it involves over night journey and there are many train between these two cities some of which are as luxurious as flight and expensive too.
It depends on person as to what he/she wish to see in a place and if he/she gets tired of some place, can move to another place.
You haven't added Hangzhou which is a beautiful place about 4hrs from Shanghai and there are number of trains that take you there. Suggest to you include if possible.

Hangzhou is a very nice touristic place that attracts about 20million people every year.It is not only popular among foreign tourists, but even many Chinese also visit this place.
Also it is just 3-4hrs train journey from Shanghai. When you say Hangzhou, the first thing comes to mind is the West lake.
It is a huge lake with all elements of a traditional chinese garden on a large scale. The lake has a natural setting with strangely shaped peaks, dense foliage and myriad colours of blossoms during spring time .The lake and its environs have all the elements of a traditional Chinese garden on a grand scale. The largest part of West Lake is known as the Outer Lake and it is bounded by the North Inner Lake, Yuehu Lake, West Inner Lake and Lesser South Lake.You can have a boating too in the lake in a typically chinese designed boat.
There are other attractions too like:
The Gu Shan (Solitary Hill,
Fei Lai Feng (Peak Flown From Afar)for sculpture and art and buddhist lovers
Ling Yin Temple (Temple of the Soul's Retreat)
13 storey high Six Harmonies Pagodas
There are any other sightseeing places in and around Hangzhou
Hangzhou is also famous for silk and Dragon well tea. Don't miss to taste this special tea in Hangzhou.
It isn't so cold as in Beijing or in Harbin.

If you get too cold in China's mainland in January, the consider finishing your trip on Hainan Island. You're still in China but on a tropical Island.
I own a B&B there and can help you find deserted beaches ancient villages...

With booking a train 10 days in advance, is there an easy way to do this? Do you knw of a website? I will be totally relying on trains i think, so it's important for me to find a way.
Hangzhou sound great, it will be making it's way onto my itinerary.
What about Visa from the UK? I read somewhere that you can get a 30 day VISA, but with everything i'm trying to include it looks like i will be there longer!
Is there a way to get a longer VISA?
With Hong Kong, i will be flying in from Bangkok - and then out to Brisbane so i'm sure over that time i will get 4 nights there.
