We have 3 months in South America and are looking at the following itinerary, does anyone have any suggestions or amends, please?
- we are married couple, early 30s, taking 3 months off work, from Aus, wanting to see the best of SA, not wanting to spend a fortune - but not broke, have both done a bit of travelling before.

The itinerary is a fantastic one. Time in quite a few places to see some great highlights.
If I were you I would build in a little time whilst down in Patagonia to go to the Torres del Paine National Park. It is spectacular. The W trek could be done in 4 days with a day either side in Puerto Natales.
I assume the boat trip is the Navimag??? It runs from PN to Puerto Montt.
Pucon and Bariloche are very similar but both worth a trip. Stunning in fact. Great choice of hostels and the food and drink chouices are brilliant. Villarica may not be necessary although climbing the volcano (Villarica I think it is called) outside Pucon is a good thing to do. Plenty adventure sports to take part in there.
I found La Paz to be a much more interesting city than Santiago (very smoggy and not actually a great deal to see). La Paz on the other hand had quite a few interesting points - markets, cycling, prison visit, a 5 day round trip to Rurrenabaque which was truely awesome.
Did said points in Peru and you will have a brilliant time. Afraid I didn't go past Lima to the north so no idea's there.
Be sure to spend at least a day either side of Iguazu falls. Unreal. Stunningly beautiful.

Looks like a great trip (did something the same back in early 2005).
Four days in Santiago would be overkill in my opinion, as we spent 2 days there and most of the second was sunbathing and swimming at Parque Metripolitano.
If you are flying from virtually sea-level to La Paz at 3660 metres I would suggest you take altitude sickness pills.
We were going to bus from Arica (northern Chile) to La Paz stopping overnight on the way to La Paz to acclimatize but when we got to the Arica bus station we were told that the border had been closed by strikers (par for the course in Bolivia).
We dashed out to the airport and managed to get seats on the next flight to La Paz.
I had started taking my altitude pills the day before but my wife thought she would be tough and refused them.
Got off the plane and within 30 seconds one lady passenger was in a wheelchair with an oxygen mask clamped to her face and there are oxygen tank racks in the arrival hall!!!!
Going from the plane's oxygen levels to the rarified air of La Paz was no joke and we moved very slowly for the next 1.5 days.
My wife got knocked around with the altitude and she was really feeling it, especially as we were walking up and down the sides of the canyon sight-seeing.
Really liked La Paz and stayed at an excellent but medium-priced hotel.
Hope you get to stay at Copacabana and trek Isla del Sol. Absolutely loved it.

Hard to believe, but....
Sam was just saying that's an active itinerary. He lives in a more laid back culture now. No need to take a shot at the guy, or call him a twat. (I feel a little Like Captain Amazing vouching for Casanova Frankenstein). At that pace, you are sampling the cultures the same way you sample snacks at a Holiday Inn buffet table.
I have to guess you know you are getting the snack platter. Enjoy the shit out of it. I've done the same kind of thing and found places I wanted to revisit.(though, to be fair...I have yet to revisit the place I loved so much on the same kind of jump)
The trip is a great one, but easier if you've aced it out already. You can do it on the fly, though. You just have to hump it out. I assume you are already planning the shit out of where you are sleeping.

I merely find posts like that unconstructive. If you are going to answer something at least try to be helpful.
Only one thing I would say is the 12 days Rio - BA where u intend on including both Iguassu and Pantanal, I dont know if its a reasonably timeframe, I may be wrong but when we went from Iguasu to Campo Grande it was not a straightforward journey as there was no direct bus we had to change at some road side cafe late at night (so presumably the opposite direction is the same), and the trips into the Pantanal are generally (as far as I remember) about 3/4 days in duration and you need 2 days at Iguassu, one on each side without a shadow of doubt.
I didnt travel from Iguassu to BA but I know this is another long trip, we went Rio (week) - Ihla Grande (2 nights) - Iguassu (2 nights) - Campo Grande (Pantanal) 3 or 4 days (cant remember exactly) and then to Bonito for 3 days and onto Bolivia, all in all we were 3 weeks doing that and we didnt have any real leisure days once we left Ihla Grande.
Oh and spend more time in La Paz than Santiago I agree with this view. Not much in Santiago, didnt leave as big an impression on me, some gorgeous architecture and that but thats about it.
