I'm afraid I can't help you with the fruit picking questions, but public transport wise, there's daily busses going everywhere you'd ever want to go (several times a day for the more popular routes), as well as a host of more regional bus companies. There's a few train connections as well, but mostly you'd take one for the novelty value, not for being a faster or better alternative over the busses.
