Do I need a sleeping bag?!

Hello! I'm leaving on Friday for a RTW trip and stressing profusely! I'm going for 3 months and in that time i'll be staying in hostels and with family. Do I need a sleeping bag? Its taking up sooo much room in my backpack so maybe I should take a blanket instead because it seems silly to take something so bulky which I probably won't end up using anyway... I'm going with a friend and shes taking a backpack... its stressing me! Thanks so much for any help

Since you're staying at hostels and with family, my opinion is you won't need one. Most hostels won't even like travellers using their own sleeping bag for hygiene reason, and I'd imagine your family would have have spare beddings etc. Among my friends and I, the only time we bring sleeping bags was when we were camping.

No definitely leave the sleeping bag behind. I travelled for 7 months and never found the need to use a sleeping bag (not that I had one). Hotels almost always provide blankets. I did pack a bed sheet which i sewed up like a sleeping bag and I did also have a thin blanket which was sewn up in the shape of a sleeping bag. I never found the use for the blanket which I took as a worst case scenario method but the sheet I always used.

No

well, a sleeping bag is not that expensive nor hard to find anyways in case you would need one. if you will be taking a car then you can always stuff one in the compartment or something... I mean it pays to be prepared...

No!
Don't bring a sleeping bag unless you plan to camp and/or will be facing cold temperatures.

You shouldn't need a sleeping bag for most hostels (you use bedding that is provided, sometimes free and sometimes not).

I've brought sleeping bag and the single sheet (different trips) and both times, just wanted to chuck it by the middle of the trip. Didn't toss the sleeping bag but did toss the sheet out though. The sheet is a better idea than the sleeping bag but make sure it's as thin, light and compact as possible.

You can take a sleeping bak inlett, its not agains coldness its only for hostels with dirty beds. Its smal and light

Herby has the right idea - ditch the sleeping bag itself and just take a sleeping bag liner (I have a silk Kathmandu one). It'll free up LOTS of room in your bag, but having the liner means you have your own clean bedding to use if you do come across one of the grungier hostels out there!!

You can get liners for sleeping bags which will take up no room at all in your bag. You can get these in most travel shops or you could also sew a sheet together to make your own. The other suggestion is to tie the sleeping bag onto front of back pack? Most back packs come with a holder on the front for you sleeping bags. I hope you get it sorted I too am setting of soon on my travels-I go to India first
