The Great Circular Indian Railway Challenge

Hello, I'm looking for travel buddies to come on a 2 week trip round the Indian rail system in feb 2011. If you like trains, and India, please get in touch.
There are no tour operators or agencies involved in this, you'll be booking everything yourself directly with IR.

Well, which all places you intend to include in India? 2 week is not enough time for exploring the vast Indian railway network !!

well, we're going flat out arif, tat's the challenge bit. bit of a charity gig you see. we'll hit dwarka, udhampur, ledo and kanyakumari, and end up back at VT. 18.5% of the network in 2weeks (and about 4 hours if we get back on time)!.

I had two 7 week trips around India, using railways and missed out a fair bit. Getting out of Goa and Calcutta (as it was then) was not easy. Goa had a few days waiting list. Another place whose name escapes me, I only got a seat because I had a 60 day Indrail pass.

You can travel by train overnight and sight-see by day. I have heard some using bribes to get seats when there are otherwise none available.

All the foreigners will be using Indrail, alas Indians cant get them, so they'll have to use a circular ticket (which is actually slightly cheaper but not as much use if the plan goes pear shaped). I have people on the trip who know more about the Indian railway booking system than Indian railways do, I'm sure.

I walked back and forth across that damn bridge in Calcutta 30 years ago as an 18 year old trying to get my ticket sorted out to Bombay. Dont talk to me about getting out of Calcutta
