mapping my travels

Hey Sam, Peter, etc.,

Hey Steph,

You'd be surprised what's in the database; I see 8 Fischbach's in Germany!

I think what's probably happening here is that the 'button' Select on Map is not pressed in. To be honest, this has happened to me before as well, as it's really hard to see when it is or isn't pressed in! Try clicking on the button and then clicking on the map. That should pre-populate the field.

In my experience though, the best way to map cities, especially small ones like this, is to just type it manually. So select Germany in the dropdown, then start typing the city or town name. After 3 characters, the system will start giving you suggestions that match those characters. If you type 'fischb' for example you'll see the 8 Fischbach's I counted with their region name behind them in a greyish colour.

Hope that helps!!

Hey Sam,

Thanks for your help! ATM, I haven't had time to try it out again, but I'll get to it eventually. You're right- I probably just missed something. (That happens to me sometimes . . . Sometimes I really think that I'm blind! ) When I have a bit more time I'll try it again and follow your instructions.

Thanks again!

Steph

Try Google Maps. I've just zoomed in on Fischbach and not only is the village there, markered, but all the streets in the village are named too.

Really? The other day, I tried that and I couldn't find Fischbach for the life of myself! Maybe I'm not quite the computer wizz that I thought I was (Well, I never thought I was a computer wizz . . .) Perhaps I should try again?

Steph

Now this is interesting. You have me intrigued now. I've just looked up Fischbach again and there appears to be four of them.
The way to search is to just go on to Google and type in 'Germany map'. Then when it comes up, there's a 'Search maps' option at the top. Simply type in 'Fischbach' and your options come up. Click on each one to see the town nearest to the city.

Google only lists 4?! We list 8 Google probably has them as well actually, they just filter them out differently.... one reason we're redoing the mapping system is to be able to get more granular, ie. type streetnames if you'd like to rather than cities. Hopefully we'll be able to share a beta version soon here for all to play with!!

Aha! You see, I was trying to zoom in! Always doing things the hard way, it seems!

It's all very much fun to do, whichever site you use.
If I've been to a place that's new to me, when I get home I have a map on the wall and it gets a little dot of either red or black. Red is a good and easy trip, black is the opposite. There are many more reds than blacks I'm happy to say.
Looking forward to Travellerspoint's new Beta versions soon.

Agree! Now that I know how to work the map, I am, too!
