Hey
I have 3 months to spend next year starting from Aug 2010 to travel around the states, i will be travelling on my own and wont be driving.
I don't mind where to go, the west would be cool. I have a budget of about £4-6k and i just would like advice on what would be my best options on where to go, what to see and how to get about. Where i can meet people as i don't really want 3 months totally on my own and i only have 3 months to see/do as much as i can of America..not long i know.
I have already been to Vegas, Memphis and New York.. loved all 3 but want to see where else to go.
What do you do for fun? What are your hobbies? What do you hope to see?
I love meeting new people, seeing new sights. I want to see as much as i can within 3 months.

If you were driving, I would recommend hitting many of our National parks. However, they are not easy to get to w/o a car. It can be done, bus/train/plane to nearest city and take a tour. You have been here, but Las Vegas is one of the best US cities to see/meet people from all over the world. Let me know if you are hitting Vegas and I will do what I can to make your visit a success. I would take buses from new york to chicago or new york to atlanta. The East coast and Midwest are beautiful during that time (you can go out West for sun anytime) and the transportation can be reasonable.
Austin, Texas! It's the best part about the big state! Delicious food, beautiful landscape and rolling hills, great music, cool people, perfect weather. it's everything you could want. Also very walkable and has many affordable activities!
Without a car/driving, I would suggest you try to pick cities that have good transit systems or that are easy to get around without a car. Here are cities that do (and that don't) fit your requirements:
Have good transit or are small enough to get around easily:
Washington, D.C.--good transit (probably best in country)
New York City--good transit (ranks right there with Washington, D.C.)
San Francisco--good transit--much of it is not standard subway, though--but old trolleys (kind of nice, actually)
New Orleans--probably best town for walking in the country (everything is fairly central or easy to get to)
Las Vegas--has new subway system which helps--and taxi system here is well-organized
Orlando---easy to get from airport to hotel--and then all hotels have buses to major attractions
Chicago--good subway system--but fairly old--and works such that you have to go through downtown when going from one outlying area to another. Also, the major airport is far from downtown--but subway will connect you
Nashville (small central area, but will need to take tour to outlying areas)
Austin (small, mostly walkable)
Memphis (small --only one major street worth visiting, though) It is harder to get from downtown to Graceland, though
Have bad transit and are spread out:
Los Angeles--the town that was built by the carmakers (who bought up and destroyed the mass transit systems years ago). It now has a new subway system, but it only goes a short ways and is mainly for downtown--which is not the place to visit in Los Angeles--all the best attractions are out of the downtown area.
Miami (difficult to get around except for South Beach area)
Atlanta--spread out--and easy to get lost since every street in this town is named "Peachtree"--seriously, there are over 100 streets with this name--why? who knows?
Denver--what mass transit?
Houston--spread out
Dallas--very spread out
Boston--built for railroads and boats--but they forgot about the subway/underground
50-50 (not great transit, but could possibly be done without a car)
Seattle--only one monorail system--and it only goes about 12 blocks--why is that?
San Diego--this is a mini-Los Angeles, but fortunately it has some trolleys and buses and trains
San Antonio--small inner city--which is where most of the sights are (including the riverwalk)
Santa Fe--small inner city--but if you want to go anywhere else, good luck.

Hi Nikki,
We did the US roadtrip from LA to NY in August/Spetember by SUV. I can only point out places we loved, like you Vegas, Memphis (loved it) and NY were great.
Suggestions - Yosemite National Park (Northern California) breathtakingly beautiful if you like camping.
LA - Long Beach is cool surfing paradise and relaxed pace.
Avoid maybe Texas and those areas around unless you are with someone - harsh terrain.
Louisville - Slugger Museum and Ali Museum
Rhode Island - community spirit.

Hey there this september, I ve been to new york, washington, atlanta, birmingham,miami and key west . All of them have their ups and downs. But key west is one of the top locations on earth for me. food is perfect people are far better than the average of usa,night life is great, hotels are not that expensive, nature is really inspiring and finally you should take a look to coral reedf which will be impossible to forget.
