Help with travelling around South Africa for World Cup neede

Hey guys,

Hi Steve,

The good news is that Durban is not too far from Johannesburg so yes you will be able to travel between the two to make kick-off for each game.

There are bus services between the two but it is pretty much a full day's travel. So that will more than likely not suite your time table. They depart Jo'burg at about 6h00 and arrive in Durban at about 20h30 the same day. A return ticket from Jo'burg to Durban costs about R260. These are comfortable Greyhound buses.

We do also have budget airlines, kalula.com and flymango.com that you can have a look at. If you start booking now you can get a return ticket from Jo'burg to Durban from about R400. It is about an hour and 10 minutes flight. Just don't leave the booking till the last minute as prices can then go as high as R1000 a ticket and will probably be even more during the WC.

The other thing that I can recommend is to contact someone like flightcenter.co.za they might be able to get you better packaged deals with accommodation. You also always have the option of renting a car if you would like to self drive but here I think you will be looking at paying a lot of money as there is normally a flat rate that needs to be paid with a further per kilometer charge and obviously petrol at your own expense and insurance. Personally I would advise against self drive.

Good luck and I hope you come right.

Leon

Hi Logoll,

Thank you for your reply. I have had a look at the flight websites and the cheapest I can find is 2400RM which is way above my budget. Also, with the buses, do you know what time they would depart from Durban and what time I would expect to get back to Johannesburg? As you can see from my iteniary, I shouldnt have a problem getting to Durban in time for the matches in Durban as I can travel the day before, however to get to the matches in Johannesburg I will have to travel on the same day as the match and try to get their in good time before kick off at 8.30pm. Can you help with this?

Thanks again
Steve

We booked all our bus tickets online at - you can do a joint search of all bus companies for the same route, and see all the departure/arrival times for that day.

Leon is right, its about a 7/8 hour drive between cities but by bus it takes longer. so assuming that you can get bus tickets (earliest possible), you have to keep in mind that the bus will drop you off in downtown joburg. are your tix in joburg for ellis park or soweto? that will make a big difference in what bus you book. if your tix are in soweto and you're taking the greyhound to joburg, you'll still need to get to soweto and take traffic into consideration. btw, soweto is on the way to downtown joburg, so if you can get the bus there directly, you will cut off about an hour here. in the end, if you are determined to make them all, you and your friend might want to rent a car. otherwise, worst case scenario, I think i'd just pick one city and hit those games...probably in durban since the weather is nicer and its a LOT easier to get around. Plus you'll be just two hours to the game reserves and could go hit up st. lucia for a night or two. just a thought. do you have a place to stay or do you need to find accommodation too? that's another thing to start booking immediately as many venues are already sold out. good luck!

Hi,

Thanks again for your replies. I have booked some bus journeys through computicket.com. on their webiste it says the buses depart the stations in JHB and Durban around 8.30am in the morning and arrive in the opposite destination around 4.30-5pm. As i will be arriving in Durban the day before the Durban games this will be fine but the bus back from Durban to JHB is on the day of the JHB games (all 8.30pm kick offs). So, providing the timetable is reliable??? then all should be ok? The games in JHB I have tickets for are at Soccer City (I think this is Soweto?) and the bus arrives at the Park City Bus Terminus - is this easy to commute between?

In terms of accommodation, my friend has a friend in JHB who I will hopefully be staying with when I am there and his uncle lives in Durban so again I'm hoping to bunk down there when in town. But yeah I have looked at accommodation for both places and it is all pretty much booked up so I'm hoping I can stay with atleast one, and hopefully both, of my friends contacts and can hit all of the games but if not then I will just focus my attention on one city.

Thanks again
Steve
