top 5 things to do in north island before i leave.... please leave yours?
My top 5:
- The Tongariro crossing
- a trip to White Island (an active volcano off the East coast)
- Bay of Islands and Cape Reinga
- Rotorua
- The drive between Rotorua and Wellington - beautiful scenery along the way.
You should be able to get some cash in hand fruit picking work somewhere; also try these 2 sites for casual/backpacker work:

I agree with the list above however id add
1. A wine tasting tour in Napier/Hastings by bike.
2. The Kauri forests inc Tane Mahuta, etc
bex76...... Im guessing that you mean the road between Hastings and Wellington on highway 2. I know I enjoyed the scenery there.
Have you considered doing some Wwoofing work? Check out www.wwoof.co.nz. Might be worth it if you cant get work at least you wont need to spend money if you wwoof.

I'd guess she means the desert road (highway 1) skirting Tongariro National Park; Hastings would be a lot out of the way en route to Wellington if coming from Rotorua. (Plus the desert road is easily the nicest drive on the North Island, what with its views on the volcanoes.)

Yes that's the one I mean Sander! The scenery is amazingly diverse along the way.
trainrider - I agree with your 2 additions. If I'd been able to put another 2 choices they would be the ones I would have chosen. The kauri forests are beautiful, and in Napier it's also worth doing an art deco walk.
Lake Waikaremoana Track - as you walk to that track, you will see some of the bird species there and you can drive to Hawke's Bay for fabulous wineries. If you want another walkathon places, go to Tongariro Northern Circuit and Whanganui Journey where tourist usually prefer that places.
