Indonesia advice

Hi Folks,

I've just spent 2 weeks in Java and Bali (as part of an organised tour) and the route we took was this:

Jakarta-Pangandaran-Yogyakarta-Seloliman Nature reserve-Mt Bromo-Lovina-Tirta Gangga-Ubud.

I wouldn't bother spending more than a day in Jakarta. Pangandaran is quite a pretty little fishing town and you can do an interesting nature walk there, but it's not really a must-see. Yogyakarta has a good vibe about it and I liked it much more than Jakarta. From Yogya you can visit Borobudur which is beautiful, and the Hindu temple Prambanan which although not as spectacular as Borobudur is definitely worth a visit. The Ramayana ballet is worth going to in Yogya and is either performed in the city centre or at Prambanan, depending on the season. I'd really recommend spending a night or 2 at Seloliman Nature reserve as it's beautiful, and they are doing some really good work there, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to get to (our tour company hired private minibuses to get there). Mt Bromo is obviously a must-see. Most people go and see it at sunrise, which means leaving your accommodation around 3.30am and hiring a jeep up the mountain. Take some warm clothes as it's much cooler up there, especially at that time of the morning.

I really liked Lovina (Bali) - it's a pretty little beach town and is a nice place to relax for a few days. I'd recommend having a massage done here. Diving is available at Menjangan reef, which is a couple of hours drive from Lovina and is supposed to be very good. Snokelling off the beach at Lovina was really good too. The drive between Lovina and Tirta Gangga is beautiful and Tirta Gannga is a pretty place to stop for a night. Here you can also visit a pretty water palace and it's possible to swim there too. Ubud is great - loads of culture, good restaurants and great shopping. From here I'd recommend doing a trip to Besikah temple and Gunung Kawi (stone memorials) - you can hire a driver to take you, which can easily be arranged in central Ubud.
